Fireworks are a big part of 4th of July celebrations. Many people plan their whole holiday around seeing the best fireworks show. The history of fireworks on Independence Day goes all the way back to the beginning of the United States.
John Adams was the first to propose celebrating the day with thousands of brightly colored explosions. Adams wrote a letter to Abigail Adams in 1776, saying that the day should be celebrated with “illuminations from one end of this continent to the other from this time forward forever more.” The first fireworks show did not take place until the next year in 1777 in Philadelphia and Boston. By 1783, there were many places that were available for people to go and enjoy the spectacular fireworks on the 4th.
